Job Description: Veterans Affairs Canada employs Canadian students as guides year round at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial both located in northern France.

This is a unique opportunity to travel, live and work in France for a period of 4 months. Student guides are required to lead guided tours (on the preserved battlefield and in underground tunnels) lasting approximately 50 minutes in both official languages. In addition, guides are expected to provide information to visitors and answer questions from the public with respect to Canadian military history (including sites), local attractions and points of interest in the region.

This position is suitable for those oriented toward client service excellence.

Upon arrival in France guides will undergo training and will need to demonstrate their ability to absorb and synthesize large amounts of information in a short period of time.

Senior Guides will perform additional tasks which include some administrative and coordination functions at the sites.

Note: To be considered for a senior guide position, students must have been previously employed as a guide at the sites and meet all requirements of the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP).

Work location:

Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, both of which are located in northern France.

Hourly rates of pay: Students employed as Guides through this program are paid as indicated in the following: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/lrco-rtor/collective/lru-mnc/student-etudiants-eng.asp. NOTE: A daily living allowance of CDN $28.00 is paid in addition to the hourly rate of pay.

Duration of employment: Guides are hired full-time only for the duration of one of the following periods:

Spring/Summer 2016 (The recruitment period ends mid December 2015)

May 2, 2016 to August 16, 2016 (Senior Guides and Guides)

Fall 2016 (The recruitment period ends mid March 2016)

August 8, 2016 to December 16, 2016 (Senior Guides)

August 8, 2016 to December 11, 2016 (Guides)

Winter/Spring 2017 (The recruitment period ends mid September 2016)

January 9, 2017 to May 9, 2017 (Senior Guides)

January 16, 2017 to May 9, 2017 (Guides)

Language Requirement:

Candidates must be fully bilingual and demonstrate that they possess advanced* oral communication skills in both English and French. This requirement will be assessed in the interview.

*Candidates must be able to give clear, detailed descriptions of complex topics, be capable of summarizing a discussion and must be able to support opinions and understand and express hypothetical and conditional ideas in their second language.
