Interpretation is a very creative and collaborative discipline. Interpreters are often life-long learners, love to ask questions and dig deeper.

A Heritage Presenter delivers interpretive presentations, programs and activities to provide visitors with opportunities to discover, appreciate, and connect with the park and its natural and cultural resources. Interpreters facilitate meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences to visitors that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us.

In this role, you will:

• Present meaningful, engaging, and enjoyable interpretation programs and activities to help connect the hearts and minds of visitors to the park.
• Adapt interpretive technique and content to suit the needs of specific visitor groups and individuals.
• Provide feedback and suggestions to improve programs and services.
• Demonstrate interpretation techniques and practices to new staff and volunteers.
• Greet and orient visitors; offer wayfinding information, public safety and interpretive messages.

Work environment

Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park are located at the tip of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula, where the Niagara Escarpment meets the clear waters of Georgian Bay. Tobermory, adjacent to the two parks, is a small village centered around a picturesque harbour that is transformed into a bustling hub of tourist activity during the summer months. These two parks welcome more than 650,000 visitors per year.

The successful candidate will deliver programs at various park sites, moving between facilities, and working outdoors. The interpretation team requires a passionate and engaged team member who has a strong orientation toward client service and educating park visitors about the natural and cultural heritage of the area. The Interpretation team is made up of 5+ interpreters, and part of the larger Visitor Experience department, a fast-paced and collaborative team of 50+ employees in peak season.

Intent of the process

This process will staff one vacant seasonal position and may be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar position (s) with various tenures, security levels and/or language requirements or in different locations.

A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training, experience and/or traditional knowledge relevant to position.

Note: Acceptable combination of education, training and experience:

Two years of secondary school or PSC approved alternatives; AND/OR
• Successful completion of a minimum of one (1) course relevant to the duties of the position (e.g., courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Aboriginal elders or group that may include but are not limited to courses in heritage interpretation, communications, public speaking, performing arts); AND/OR
• A minimum of three (3) months experience working in the fields of education, interpretation, environmental sciences, and/or outreach-communications.

Degree equivalency

• Experience using communication techniques; presentation and interpretation techniques, such as storytelling, demonstration, theatre/performing arts, education, museum programs, or guided walks; and
• Experience in connecting with nature; such as environmental work experience, outdoor hobbies, natural heritage studies, or personal interest in the natural world.

• General knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage of Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park.

• Work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements
• Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods
• May be required to handle wildlife and captive animals
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Possession or willingness to obtain a valid First Aid and CPR (level C and AED)

Conditions of employment

• Reliability Status security clearance.
• Possess and maintain a valid Class G Driver’s License
