Assessment accommodation

Applicants must list these factors in their cover letter, and then write one or two paragraphs for each demonstrating how they meet these factors by providing concrete examples. Duties

The duties for student positions at Fort St. James National Historic Site vary. This process may be used to staff café workers, maintenance assistants, as well as students to help at the front desk or with heritage presenter or administrative duties.

Café Worker
Working in the Commemoration Café at Fort St. James National Historic Site. Duties include plating, serving and preparing food, cleaning, taking orders, washing dishes, gardening and maintaining a running inventory. Interacting pleasantly with visitors while providing excellent customer service.

Maintenance Assistant
Duties include lawn care, painting, animal care and assisting the maintenance person in basic site maintenance such as fence and boardwalk repair, cutting splitting and hauling firewood and driving the site truck on short errands.

Front Desk
Working at the front desk of the Visitor Reception Center at Fort St. James National Historic Site. Duties include greeting visitors, taking payments, working a POS system, selling gift store items, helping visitors with questions/directions, light housekeeping/cleaning duties as required.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Fort St. James National Historic Site, with the largest collection of original fur trade buildings in Canada, its remarkable view out over beautiful Stuart Lake, and authentic, entertaining execution of a day in the summer of 1896, is one of Canada’s premiere fur trading posts. Attracting both local and international guests in the summer season, it contributes to a diversified economy and provides community leadership in celebrating and protecting the cultural heritage of Fort St. James. The site offers one of the best opportunities to connect northern British Columbia residents to their nationally significant heritage and to provide them with a Parks Canada experience.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff up to 6 anticipated student vacancies for the 2023 operating season (May-September 2023).

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in the same or other parts of the country.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - You are required to obtain and maintain this security level throughout this employment at Parks Canada Agency.

Other Conditions of Employment:
• You may be required to work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays as scheduled by your delegated manager. Compensation will be as prescribed in the Terms and Conditions of Employment applicable to you.
• You must be willing to work and travel in a variety of terrains and weather conditions in the performance of the duties.
• You will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
• You may be required to wear a uniform while performing your duties. In this case, Parks Canada will provide you with the uniforms you require in accordance with the Parks Canada Uniform Policy.
