Duties

Reports to the QA Coordinator. Provides laboratory support services including decontamination of waste, preparation of sterile microbiological culture media, reagents, supplies, glassware and utensils. Operates, maintains and monitors the equipment necessary for the preparation of culture media, supplies, tools and instruments. Keep records of these activities. If out of range or there are any issues, report the nonconformance to the QA Coordinator and participate in the investigation if required. Follows and contributes to the laboratory quality assurance system and safety management system.

Intent of the process

The intent is to have an inventory of candidates to draw from when vacancies arise for current and future needs at the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Laboratory. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis as long as the poster is active.

Employees must be present in the laboratory; remote work is not a possibility.

As we anticipate a large number of applications, we may be applying volume management strategies throughout the selection process such as, but not limited to, top-down approach, cut-off scores and/or random selection.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

EE1: Experience in microbiology or chemistry or in a laboratory environment.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE

EK1: Knowledge of general laboratory techniques and safety procedures.

Essential qualifications, such as experience, competencies, abilities and knowledge will vary depending on the position being staffed. Essential qualifications will be assessed by the manager prior to an appointment being made.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

AE1: Experience in preparing media, decontamination of waste, sterilization of supplies and cleaning of glassware.

AE2: Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE

AK1: Knowledge of preparation of media and reagents.

AK2: Knowledge of sterilization techniques.

AK3: Knowledge of quality assurance procedures including ISO/IEC 17025.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five or ten years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

The following conditions of employment are required for an appointment:
• Adherence to the CFIA Code of Conduct.
• Adherence to the CFIA Conflict of Interest and Post- Employment Policy.
• Compliance with the Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector.
• Legal status to accept employment for the entire period of employment.
• Exposure to smells and/or other noxious odours
• Working with chemical/microbiological agents
• Lifting of media bottles, waste buckets, etc.
• Willingness to work overtime.
• Willingness to work an altered work week
