Duties

A day in the life of the Waterton Lakes Field Unit External Relations Manager:

This position is based in Waterton Lakes National Park, in the southwest corner of Alberta. Waterton is Canada’s fourth oldest national park, and is world renowned for its spectacular scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. With Glacier National Park in Montana, Waterton is part of the world’s first international peace park. The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your responsibilities include working with colleagues at Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, located on the Cowboy Trail, 13 km south of Longview, Alberta. The Bar U is a living ranch that commemorates the important role of the ranching industry in Canadian history.
Waterton Lakes National Park hosts over 400 thousand visitors a year from around the world. The Park is a pillar of Alberta’s internationally recognized tourism offer, and a major driver for the regional economy of southwestern Alberta.

Your role encompasses all aspects of external relations related to Waterton Lakes Field Unit. You supervise staff consisting of Internet Content and New Media Officer, Partnering Engagement & Communications Officer, and Public Outreach Education Officers, plus students. Your work will involve providing inspired leadership to day to day and long term programs through regular meetings with your staff and other Field Unit staff. Your effort to build and maintain the External Relations team and the other teams you are part of is essential.

You plan and manage the design, development and implementation of the Field Unit external relations program. You deliver strategic program direction and consultation strategies and input to policy and program design/development. You provide advice on the management of engagement and external relation strategies with partners and stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and contribution to Field Unit and Agency goals and objectives. You lead the development of external communications products and services targeting audiences off-site. You will identify and advise on public outreach education program objectives, directions, strategies, priorities and requirements to increase Canadians’ understanding and appreciation of the significance of Parks Canada’s administered places and the importance of protecting and presenting them.

Your work will see you active in a variety of teams. You work often and actively with your Field Unit management team colleagues supporting each other in achieving shared goals. You will collaborate with other members of Parks Canada’s team from other Field Units and National Office to contribute to larger scale program efforts. Very importantly you will be asked to contribute to evolving relationships with indigenous partners on a variety of initiatives.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in communications, public relations, journalism, education, business administration or other discipline relevant to the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
• **Significant experience in the development, delivery, management and evaluation of strategies and programs in two of the following three fields:
o Stakeholder and partner engagement;
o Public outreach and education;
o Communications, public relations, marketing and promotions.
• **Significant experience in developing and managing relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders and partners;
• Experience in issues management including providing support, briefings and expert advice to senior management on strategic directions, sensitive *external relations issues, priorities and policy positions with respect to external relations;
• Experience in the management of human and financial resources.

*The term “external relations” in this text includes stakeholder and partner engagement, public outreach education, communication and public relations.
**Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of the duties for a period of approximately two (2) years.
