Duties

EG-03 Junior Technician/Support: In an assisting capacity, provides operational and technical support in a laboratory and/or field setting, which may include providing support/assistance in the laboratory, performing experiments and/or diagnostic testing, collecting and recording technical data or test results, and operating basic laboratory equipment.

EG-04 Technician/Support: Provides operational and technical support in a laboratory and/or field setting, which may include independently performing experiments and/or diagnostic testing, collecting and recording technical data or test results, and operating basic laboratory equipment.

Work environment

The Public Health Agency of Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) provides scientific expertise and laboratory capacity for infectious disease monitoring, detection, investigation and outbreak response to support national and international public health action. Our laboratories lead the development and application of cutting edge tools to support innovation in infectious disease diagnostics, lab-based surveillance and applied and basic research on a range of pathogens with public health significance. Intent of the process

Please note that this inventory will primarily be used to staff opportunities at National Microbiology Laboratory locations in Winnipeg, Guelph and Saint-Hyacinthe, however it may be used to staff future opportunities in other cities.

This inventory is for casual employment. Casual employment is a temporary employment of 90 working days or less, in a calendar year, to meet needs arising from such contingencies as vacations, sick and training leaves, to conduct special projects that are anticipated but dependent of the availability of funds, etc.

NOTE: Casual appointments are excluded from the provisions of the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA). This means casual appointments will not be eligible to apply to internal appointment processes. In addition, the PSEA specifies that the number of days worked as a casual worker cannot exceed 90 days in a calendar year within the same department.

EDUCATION:
A secondary school diploma.

Degree equivalency

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

EDUCATON:
Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Bioinformatics or Biology or other related discipline; or

Current active registration with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a general Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and current active provincial MLT registration in the province in which the position is located, or pending registration, while awaiting the Medical Laboratory Sciences National Exam results. Documentation of equivalent standing within the relevant jurisdiction will be considered; or

A combination of education, training and experience with specialization in a biological science relevant to human health.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience providing support/assistance and/or performing experiments and projects in a laboratory setting.
Experience in operation of laboratory equipment and/or field instrumentation.
Experience in the collation, review and analysis of data and results generated in a laboratory.
Experience in performing routine biological techniques or methods in one or more of the following disciplines; microbiology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology or mycology), cell biology or molecular biology.

Operational Requirements:
Depending on the needs of the position one or more may be required:

• Must be available during core hours.
• Willingness and ability to occasionally work overtime.

• Willingness and ability to work with human and animal laboratory specimens.
• Willingness and ability to work with infectious agents and toxic chemicals.
