This position is for a computational mechanics based research scientist position. The incumbent will, in consultation with research scientists and technologists and in direct support of program objectives, develop and apply computational mechanics and materials science techniques, as required to meet program objectives. The incumbent will participate in projects and supervise technicians, engineers, and scientists using the CanmetMATERIALS facilities, advise on computational procedures, instruct others in applications of computational technologies as required, and lead in the interpretation of results. Research will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.

Work environment

This position is located in Hamilton, Ontario. CanmetMATERIALS is a state-of-the-art facility in materials research that provides world-class R&D in partnership with universities and industry. It supports innovation in advanced materials, manufacturing and clean energy.

Intent of the process

The position for which we are recruiting is a full-time indeterminate position, after that position is filled a pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff with identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized postsecondary institution in a field of natural science or engineering related to the duties of the position, such as Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics, coupled with acceptable research, training and experience.

Productivity in scientific research as demonstrated by achievements in the form of authorship of: published papers, reports or books, resulting from output of scientific research related to the duties of the position.

NOTE: Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational
equipment and problems,
• Operational research and scientific analysis related to the duties of the
position or,
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in
research and development.

Degree equivalency

• Experience in performing computational scientific research as related to material behaviour, design,
testing, fabrication or processing.
• Experience using finite element software (commercial, open source or custom) for simulations of the
mechanical behaviour of materials, for example Abaqus or LS-Dyna
• Experience in collaborative research with universities, governments, science-based non-government
organizations or industry.

• Three or more years experience conducting scientific research on materials used in the transportation,
oil and gas, energy production, energy efficiency or clean energy technologies industries;
• Experience using other (non-finite element) numerical methods for simulations of property-structure-
process relationships of materials.
• Experience in preparing proposals, developing and leading research projects

• Knowledge of the fundamental principles of materials science, especially phenomena that determine
material microstructure, property and performance relationships;
• Knowledge of continuum mechanics as applied to the simulation of material behaviour
• Knowledge of computational and numerical techniques, including finite element methods, as applied
to modelling the mechanical behaviour of materials;
• Knowledge of constitutive laws as related to modelling materials behaviour.

• Ability to develop computational codes using a high level language such as Fortran, C, C++ or equivalent;
• Ability to develop models that explain materials performance from scientific observations;
• Ability to communicate complex scientific subject matter verbally;
• Ability to communicate complex scientific subject matter in writing;
