Intent of the process

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be established to staff similar or identical positions at Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) with various linguistic profiles and/or requirements as well as tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate) and/or security clearance (reliability or secret), which may vary according to the position being staffed.

✔ Graduation with a Master’s degree in Nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution*


Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution* in a Nurse Practitioner Program with successful completion of approved training in Primary Care, All Ages specialization or some other specialty relevant to the position.

*Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality
assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.

Degree equivalency

✔ Eligibility for registration as a Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) in a province or territory of Canada.

✔ Recent* and Significant** experience as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) providing Community Health or Primary Healthcare services in one or more of the following areas?
• Urgent or Emergency Care
• Acute or Intensive Care
• Primary Care
• Chronic Disease Management

Recent* is defined as within the last five (5) years.

Significant** is defined as having at least two (2) years of experience with the candidate performing complex activities related to this task in a wide variety of healthcare situations.

✔ Experience developing OR delivering programs or projects relating to issues in healthcare.

Conditions of employment

✔ Reliability Status Security Clearance

✔ Current valid registration as a Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) and a member in good standing without conditions on license in at least one of the following provinces: Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, and willingness to seek registration in any of the remaining provinces mentioned.

✔ Medical Clearance:
i) PRE-PLACEMENT: Category 1 health evaluation ii) PERIODIC: Category 3 health evaluation according to the schedule outlined in the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard for “First Nations and Inuit Health Branch Nurses Assigned to Isolated Posts in Northern First Nations Communities”

ii) Agree to undertake a Category 3 pre-placement periodic health evaluation in accordance with Appendix A of the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard Schedule (https://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?id=12561&section=HTML)

✔ Willingness and ability to travel

✔ Willingness and ability to travel to remote communities across Canada for a minimum of at least 50% of the work

✔ Willingness and ability to remain on travel status for extended periods of time

✔ Possession of a valid driver's license or personal mobility to a degree normally associated with the possession of a driver's license

✔ Willingness and ability to complete mandatory education/training relevant to the position including Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C, renewed annually; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); International Trauma Life Support (ITLS); Controlled Substances/Immunization Certification)

✔ Willingness and ability to work overtime on short notice

✔ Willingness and ability to provide relief to remote and isolated communities in urgent situations

✔ Willingness and ability to travel in small aircraft, in off road vehicles and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas

✔ Willingness and ability to work in a rigorous, diverse and often demanding work environment

✔ Willingness to be assigned to a variety of communities as operationally required

✔ Willingness and ability to perform on call duties, work after hours, and on weekends as required

✔ Willingness and ability to complete mandatory education/training relevant to the position.
