This Indigenous Relations Officer position has been created to address the growing requirement for direct and consistent support to Manitoba Field Unit’s Indigenous Relations portfolio in Manitoba North. Building trusting relationships with key contacts among the Indigenous communities that work with Parks Canada, and among staff will be the essential means of advancing priorities consistent with the Government of Canada priority of reconciliation. This position will be responsible for leading in the advancement of relationship management with First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities in working towards Parks Canada priorities. Undertakes special projects, including research on assigned topics related to Indigenous issues relevant to Parks Canada and the Manitoba Field Unit. Assists in the development and implementation of staff training and outreach programs for Indigenous communities. The role will involve significant travel in Manitoba – at times to remote communities which have limited modes of travel and accommodations available.

This Indigenous Relations Officer position based in Churchill, which is a small, isolated town of 800 people, accessible only by air and rail. Successful candidates may be entitled to financial relocation support in line with the NJC Directive on Relocation. Successful completion of secondary school or an acceptable combination of education, training, traditional knowledge and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience working with Indigenous peoples / groups in areas such as Indigenous cultures and/or land development

Experience liaising and collaborating with Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups, stakeholders, and potential contractors and partners

Experience supporting consultation and/or engagement activities

Experience working or traveling in remote Northern communities.

Knowledge
• Knowledge of northern Indigenous culture, history, and traditional activities, particularly in relation to Wapusk National Park, Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site and York Factory National Historic Site;
• Knowledge of Treaty and land claim agreements as they relate to cooperative management of Parks Canada places;
• Knowledge of processes for public consultation.
