Duties

This position supports the operations of 4 national historic sites in the Banff Field Unit: Cave and Basin, Banff Park Museum, Rocky Mountain House and Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station. This position also supports field unit wide cultural resource management activities and routinely works across functions. Increasing knowledge and awareness about the Banff Field Unit collections and sharing information with colleagues, visitors and external partners is an important aspect of this role.

This position includes managing a small budget and administrative tasks such as contracting services, developing collaborative partnerships, report writing, supervising students, and project development and oversight.

Other duties include:
• Participating in the development of collections management work plans, and objectives with a focus on supporting the priorities listed in the national historic site management plans and statements
• Responding to inquiries on collections; maintaining a network of contacts with colleagues, researchers, professional staff, employees in other government departments, institutions and the private sector
• Developing and delivering training on the physical care, maintenance, handling and protection of collection items for new staff
• Working cross functionally with Visitor Experience Product Development Officers and Interpretation Specialists on the development and delivery of public programs relevant to collections, historic objects, cultural resources and the field of conservation

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in: Museum Studies; Archival Studies; Conservation Studies; Cultural Resource Management; History; Curatorial Studies and other disciplines associated with collections and historic objects.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• With digital collection management systems
• Caring for and monitoring of historic object and natural history collections, including health and safety considerations
• With methods and techniques for cataloguing, registering and inventorying collections to provide collections management services
• Analyzing and evaluating data related to collections and monitoring protocols, making assessments and developing work plans in support of the protection and conservation of objects in the collection
• Developing visitor focused programs that raise awareness about collections and conservation practices

• Developing and maintaining systems and processes for monitoring, physical care, maintenance, handling and protection of historical objects, including natural history specimens and to a lesser degree archeological objects
• Working with computerized records and online inventory systems
• Working with a diversity of cross functional experts. (e.g. historians, conservators, cultural resource advisors, interpreters) and external partners
• Ability to take initiative to ensure tasks are completed in a timely fashion

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willing to work from various locations. This position is based in Banff, Alberta and requires frequent travel to Rocky Mountain House, including multi-day site visits (accommodations will be provided). Occasional travel to locations throughout the Banff Field Unit may also be required
• Willing and able to travel to various outdoor sites with some exposure to various weather conditions
• Willing and able to work irregular hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, when required

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status including fingerprints
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License
