Duties

Provides skilled mechanical maintenance, repair and modification of heavy and light vehicles and equipment in a Parks Canada Agency field unit or service center.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill an indeterminate year round position in Banff, AB and a potential vacancy in Jasper, AB. However, a qualified list may be established to fill similar positions - current and future - of various tenures, throughout the Highway Operations Unit.

EXPERIENCE
• Recent and significant** experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, propane, and diesel powered vehicles and equipment;
• Significant** experience in the repair of diesel and gas powered grounds and maintenance equipment.

Recent and significant ** are defined as a minimum of 2 years’ experience within the past 5 years.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the incumbent to:
• Participate in and complete any and all additional job related training
• Conduct repetitive tasks;
• Make moderate* to heavy** physical efforts, including lifting supplies, tools and equipment and standing for prolonged periods.

* Moderate is defined as lifting 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs.
** Heavy is defined as lifting 100 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs

Physical Effort:
The work requires working in awkward or confined positions in and under equipment with regular requirements to manipulate heavy objects such as tires, transmissions, transfer boxes, and vehicle attachments. The work requires pulling, pushing, bending, lifting, moving, manipulating and positioning heavy and awkward components and assemblies either by hand or using devices such as slings and other supports. Many objects/components will weigh in excess of 25 kilograms.

•Knowledge of internal combustion engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, steering, braking, and drive systems;
•Knowledge of how to inspect, repair and test equipment, machinery and fleet;
•Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles, procedures, and regulations;
•Knowledge of troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques;
•Knowledge of health and safety policies and procedures

• Ability to read mechanical drawings;
• Ability to diagnose equipment faults using laptop or supplied services manuals and plan/perform appropriate corrective actions;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
•The Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the Parks Canada Agency requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and that they either attest to their vaccination status or have been accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground of discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act prior to the date of their appointment.

•Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
•Willingness to wear identifier clothing and safety equipment;
•Willingness to travel and/or work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time;
•Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays, provincial/territorial holidays and call back or standby duty;
•Candidates may be required to undergo and meet the requirements for a medical examination/pre-employment medical examinations and periodic medical checks.
