Duties

Primary duties include, but are not limited to,
1) Provide technical support in the field and laboratory,
2) collect and maintain data and samples for the execution of prescribed fisheries sampling plans,
3) operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment, and
4) identify equipment and supplies to be restocked.

Education:
E1.A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience :
EX1.Experience in the treatment of marine biological organisms.

Knowledge:
K1.­Knowledge of the methods related to sampling activities in fisheries science, at sea, in the field or the lab, and to the preservation of marine organisms samples;
K2.­Basic knowledge related to microcomputer science.

Abilities and skills:
­A1.Ability to perform his/her work according to standard procedures;
A2.Ability to learn new techniques and methods;
A3.Ability to organize his/her work.

Personal suitabilities:

Education:
E1.Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in natural sciences, biological techniques or other field related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experiences:
­EX1.Experience in the care and custody of scientific equipment;

­EX2.Experience in the preservation of biological samples;

­EX3.Experience in the acquisition, validation and safeguarding of fisheries science data;

EX4.Experience in scientific work, applying standardized protocols, during sampling activities carried out at sea, at wharf or in a plant;

EX5.Experience working with marine organisms for identification, collection and preservation of biological samples.

Knowledge :
K1.­Knowledge of the marine fishing industry in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

­Hold a valid driver's licence;
­Hold a valid medical certificate issued by Health Canada;
Be able and willing to work at sea, on an irregular schedule, in isolated, confined space and/or adverse weather conditions;
Be able and willing to work at sea, at wharf or in a factory, outside of normal business hours, in variable environments;
Be able and willing to work for extended periods of time at sea, in a factory, at wharf or in a laboratory;
Be able and willing to travel.
