Duties
Summary of Duties
1. Plans, organizes, directs and conducts epidemiological and medical research on the health effects of (ambient air pollutants, outdoor biologicals, and indoor air quality) and other environmental factors.
2. Analyses and interprets data from epidemiological and medical and conducts critical reviews of scientific literature and other information.
3. Presents results of research studies through publications in scientific journals and other appropriate venues.
4. Designs and conducts economic evaluation studies, such as cost-benefit analyses, of environmental health and safety programs.
5. Communicates with the public, medical and public health professionals, and stakeholders with respect to the area of specialisation.
6. Drafts replies to letters or questions, press releases and other briefing material for the Minister where there is a requirement for epidemiological, medical, public health or health economics information.
7. Coordinates human, financial and material resources allocated to research projects.
8. Establishes and maintains national and international collaborative working relationships; participates in national and international medical conferences.

The Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch (HECSB) helps to maintain and improve the health of all Canadians by promoting healthy living, working and recreational environments, and by minimizing the harm caused by environmental factors, exposure to chemicals and radiation sources, workplace hazardous products, and unsafe consumer products and cosmetics. We work with Canadians, and other partners, to help prevent health and safety issues, target the highest risk areas to maximize our impact, and respond quickly when necessary to protect the health and safety Canadians. HECSB is organized into four directorates, each with responsibilities for a wide variety of policies, programs and services.
Intent of the process
This is an anticipatory staffing process designed to create a pool of qualified candidates. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar permanent or temporary positions within Health Canada.

Education

The minimum standard is:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized school of medicine.
Occupational Certification
Eligibility for licence to practice medicine in a province or territory of Canada.
Experience
Experience in planning, organizing, directing and conducting epidemiological and medical research.
Experience in developing strategic partnerships with key stakeholders on health-related issues.

Education
• Specialty certification in public health and preventive medicine, or
• Master of Science in epidemiology, or
• Master of Public Health.
