Duties
You arrive at the office in Sidney, BC. On fieldwork days, your day begins with checking in with your team and Indigenous Partners to finalize the trip plan, review marine safety protocols and load equipment and supplies on the boat. As most of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is accessed by boat, you often travel to the various islands by vessel learning about the physical geography of the islands and region, while discovering the unique history and stories that describe peoples’ connection to the Southern Gulf Islands that go back thousands of years.
PM03/04:
While conducting regular cultural resource monitoring, you act as the eyes and ears on the ground as a technician and a steward of the park reserve. On any given day you may visit an historic homestead site with a 100-year-old apple orchard or monitor archaeological sites for signs of erosion. During the monitoring of these places, you take photographs and collect information to document any changes or impacts to the cultural features. In the process, you work closely with Indigenous cultural experts, archaeologists, other park staff.
Office and computer-based work is important too and constitutes a large portion of the job. Back at the office you maintain a site record with any changes observed and update the database of cultural sites. You will take this information and prepare a report or presentation for your colleagues or partners and stakeholders.
You might conduct archival research in support of various Cultural Heritage projects and pull together information that will help to understand and share a piece of the history of the Gulf Islands. You will also assist with administrative duties, preparing funding applications, and help support the day-to-day functionality of the Cultural Heritage team. Largely, you work closely with your co-workers and as part of a multidisciplinary team, to better protect and present the cultural and natural history of the lands in the park reserve.
PM-04: Will involve additional duties specific to the development, coordination, administration, and delivery of a monitoring project involving ongoing coastal erosion of cultural sites. This position is project-specific and will work closely with the national office Terrestrial Archaeology team and GINPR First Nations program. It will involve developing and fostering partnerships and project management.
