Duties

This is a high energy, self-motivated position as Supervisor of the Gardens and Animals section at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Leading a team, you will be responsible for scheduling and supervising staff; caring for barnyard animals; designing, planting and maintaining five 18th century gardens; ordering and tracking supplies; performing administrative tasks; and planning and organizing daily activities and programs for the visiting public.

Intent of the process

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in same or other parts of the country.

Education
• A secondary school diploma or PSC approved alternative or acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to position.

Degree equivalency

Experience
• Experience in caring for barnyard animals, working or growing up on a farm.
• Experience in designing, laying out, planting, and maintaining gardens.
• Experience in leading or supervising a team.
• Experience in using a computer: Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail.

Operational Requirements:
• Work shift work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays.
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per PCA requirements.
• Work in varied terrains and weather conditions.
• Sit for long periods during meetings and administrative tasks.
• Frequently stand for long period.
• Frequently walk distances up to a kilometre.
• Frequently bend, crouch, and kneel while gardening or handling animals.
• Regularly lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Be exposed to wood and coal smoke, dust, pollen, and other airborne irritants.
• Handle livestock.
• Work with hand tools.

Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license or other provincial equivalent.
