Duties

Reporting to the unit supervisor Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Conducts complex analytical procedures for diagnostic, project and/or method improvement work.
- Evaluates, reviews, and interprets analytical data.
- Troubleshoots, investigates, and solves performance issues with laboratory methods and equipment.
- Maintains comprehensive records of samples, observations, measurements, and tests conducted.
- Prioritizes samples for maximum efficiency in meeting turnaround times.
- Contributes to the laboratory quality assurance system and safety management system.
- Working in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions with toxins and allergens. Extensive periods of standing, lifting heavy samples, shucking of bivalve shellfish; exposure to allergens such as shellfish, crustaceans, nuts, eggs, milk, etc.

Work environment

Employees must be available to work on site at the laboratory location; remote work is not a possibility.

Intent of the process

The intent is to have an inventory of candidates to select from as vacancies arise for current and future needs at the CFIA Chemistry laboratories in Burnaby, BC, Calgary, AB, and Saskatoon, SK. ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

EEd1: A diploma or bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a field related to the functions of the position such as: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Chemistry, or other specialty relevant to the position.

OR

Final year student enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a field related to the functions of the position such as: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Chemistry, or other specialty relevant to the position.

Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

EE1: Recent* experience conducting analytical procedures and methodologies for diagnostic or research activities in a chemistry laboratory environment operating under a quality management system.

EE2: Recent* experience evaluating and interpreting analytical data.

EE3: Recent* experience in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting analytical laboratory equipment for chemical analyses, such as high performance liquid or gas chromatography.

EE4: Recent* experience in writing documents such as standard operating procedures, project reports, or presenting data or experimental findings.

EE5: Recent* experience in following health and safety guidelines in a laboratory environment.

*Recent experience is defined as experience normally acquired within the last five (5) years. Experience acquired through volunteering or programs such as course work and co-op terms will be accepted. Please state start and end dates when experience was obtained/gained.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

AEx1: Experience in conducting complex analysis of samples for trace level contaminants or residues.

AEx2: Experience working within a ISO 17025 management system.

AEx3: Experience evaluating and/or validating analytical methodologies.

AEx4: Experience working with Marine Shellfish Toxins.

AEx5: Experience working with Trace Metal Contaminants.

AEx6: Experience working in a regulatory testing environment.

AEx7: Significant* experience in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting a Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

AEx8: Significant* experience in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

AEx9: Experience with MS Office Suite.

Significant* experience refers to the depth and breadth of experience normally acquired over a period of three (3) years. Experience acquired through volunteering or programs such as course work and co-op terms will be accepted. Please state start and end dates when experience was obtained/gained.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

• Medical suitability: Pass a Pre-placement Health Evaluation and Periodic Health Evaluation.
• Willing and available to travel, as required
• Willing and available to work shifts
• Willing and available to work irregular hours (e.g., days, nights, weekends, statutory holidays)
• Willing and available to work overtime, as required
• To use in the prescribed circumstances and manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing.
• Willing and able to be immunized as indicated by job risk, location, overseas travel and other identified risks.
• To use prescribed and provided respiratory equipment that meets the respiratory program requirements; to undergo fit testing (e.g. may need to be clean-shaven, depending on the respirator design).
• Willing and able to work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions and with pathogens in high security laboratory biocontainment or with potential allergens
