About the position
In the Conservation Science (CS) division, we study heritage materials and their properties for their identification, to further conservation, authentication, interpretation and to understand behaviour in different environments.We utilize a broad range of laboratory based and portable scientific instrumentation including but not limited to; gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and a range of scientific imaging techniques. We carry out this work as part of our services delivered to heritage clients. We also carry out this work to further the research and development that support CCI's mandate and to advance the international field of heritage science. Research at CCI can include the study of materials to understand chemical and physical properties of heritage materials or materials used in conservation treatment, the development of scientific methods and applied research to answer conservation questions and generate new knowledge for treatments or collections, based on an accumulation and interpretation of experimental data. As the Manager of Conservation Science, you will be expected to:
• Manage an interdisciplinary team of heritage scientists with a variety of specialisations.
• Build relationships with stakeholders in the heritage sector to better understand client needs and to create mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborations.
• Triage requests and monitor the performance of services rendered to external clients.
• Manage the forecasting/invoicing of revenue and overall budget for the team.
• Manage the long-term planning and daily requirements of laboratory-based functions with specialised equipment and responsibilities as relate to occupational health and safety.
• Work to ensure that the CS team is contributing towards overall CCI strategic objectives, all the while responding to the needs of clients.
• Manage complex projects and work closely with other CCI managers and professional staff for projects requiring input from other specialists.
• Strategically lead the CS team to maximize its impact in all 3 areas of CCI’s mandate: services, research and knowledge dissemination.
Working at the Canadian Conservation Institute means:
- Collaborating with a team of conservation professionals in conservation treatment, preventive conservation and conservation science;
- Collaborating with specialists in publications, communications and training;
- Working with clients – primarily with heritage professionals and institutions (museums, libraries, archives, cultural centres) in Canada;
- Maintaining close connections with organizations and colleagues from around the world to collaborate on research projects or to share their knowledge at professional conferences.Indigenous communities (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) in Canada are diverse and have customs that dictate the care and handling of sacred or other important items. CCI recognizes the importance of respecting all such protocols and strengthening partnerships with Indigenous Peoples, guided by reconciliation. In general, the employee appointed to this position should expect to work from the office at 1030 Innes Road, Ottawa, Ontario.

Operational Requirements

1.The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization. *For example: heritage science, archaeometry, engineering

Experience working in the field of conservation, conservation science or cultural heritage (e.g. museum, gallery, archive, historic site, academia or governmental organization, a non-profit organization, etc.).2. Experience in planning, designing and leading projects involving multiple stakeholders.3. Experience in providing technical or strategical advice to clients or senior management on complex issues*. 4. Experience in scientific research defined as:
1) research or scholarly studies towards degree thesis/dissertation or published in peer reviewed journals or,
2) professional practice recognized for its high quality nationally and internationally, that involves primary research.*Complex issues should have at least two (2) of the following characteristics: multidimensional, sensitive, confidential, affecting many partners or stakeholders, precedent setting, having a major impact on program delivery or having a potential for media coverage.
